[Warmup/Assessment] Teacher Survey & Student Match

LEVEL: Basic, Intermediate

TIME: 10-15 minutes

PURPOSE: Connecting initial warmup activity to end of class independent activity/assessment while maximizing student interactivity and encouraging students to practice asking/answering questions with one another.

PREPARATION AND MATERIALS:

  • Students should be able to ask questions, or are being taught a lesson involving questions
  • A topic that can be surveyed (example: family members, pets, hobbies, places you have been, favorite food, etc)
  • Whiteboard and markers for the teacher
  • Students should have paper and pen/pencil
  • Camera (Smartphone)
  • Optional: Printed copies of the survey to be conducted

ACTIVITY:

There are two surveys that will be conducted. Survey #1, individual students will answer themselves. Survey #2, the rest of the class needs to answer.

Survey #1 occurs during the warmup, right before class objective discussion. At this point, the topic of the day should be introduced and memory of students recalled to known vocabulary. The teacher proceeds to conduct a survey of the class on the topic. This can be verbally, or have students come up and mark their answers on the board. For example:

  • How many students have a sister, brother, or no siblings at all
  • What pets people have
  • What do you like to do for fun?
  • What countries have you been to?

Take a picture and erase the board.

Survey #2 occurs during the end of class. The teacher either passes out printed copy of empty survey sheet OR recreates the blank survey on the whiteboard for students to copy on their own paper. Students must then go to at least THREE fellow students, asking questions to fill out the survey of their own.

At the end, students sit down. The teacher then goes around the room, pointing to each student and asking the rest of the class what on the board they should tally. The target student should not answer.

For example:

If John has a brother—

Survey #1, he will mark on the board/say himself he has a brother

Survey #2, the rest of the class/those who talked to John should say he has a brother

If Alice has a cat—

Survey #1, she will mark on the board/say herself she has a cat

Survey #2, the rest of the class/those who talked to Alice should say she has a cat

At the end, compare the results to the picture.
